Description: | peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha [Source:HGNC Symbol;Acc:HGNC:9232]
Entrez Summary | #!usr/local/bin/perl ?> Peroxisome proliferators include hypolipidemic drugs, herbicides, leukotriene antagonists, and plasticizers; this term arises because they induce an increase in the size and number of peroxisomes. Peroxisomes are subcellular organelles found in plants and animals that contain enzymes for respiration and for cholesterol and lipid metabolism. The action of peroxisome proliferators is thought to be mediated via specific receptors, called PPARs, which belong to the steroid hormone receptor superfamily. PPARs affect the expression of target genes involved in cell proliferation, cell differentiation and in immune and inflammation responses. Three closely related subtypes (alpha, beta/delta, and gamma) have been identified. This gene encodes the subtype PPAR-alpha, which is a nuclear transcription factor. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described for this gene, although the full-length nature of only two has been determined. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Initial Assessment
1a1 Protein has a high confidence PWM (HT-SELEX, PBM or B1H model) or there is a crystal structure that supports sequence specific DNA binding; 1a2 There is high confidence data for a close ortholog (as defined in CisBP); 2a1 There is lower confidence direct evidence, such as a Jaspar, Hocomoco or Transfac model; 2a2 There is lower confidence evidence for an close ortholog; 3a There is decent circumstantial evidence for its role as a TF or not; 4a Two or more datasets predict it as a TF; 5a One of the source datasets predicts is as a TF |
2a1, Lower confidence direct evidence |
